As parents, your first question will probably be about the safety and well-being of your child. Rest assured the primary goal of the RCYFL and the Wentworth Pantherscoaches is your child's well-being. We strive to maintain a positive environment where kids can learn the game of football.
For the tackle teams, we require 2 weeks of conditioning without pads where no hitting takes place. We gradually move into adding equipment and light hitting then on to full equipment and hitting to move new players into the feel of the game slowly. All of this is done under closely supervised conditions and with the player's size and experience taken into consideration.
ALL tackle football players are required to wear full padding, helmets and mouthpieces at during practices and games. We check the equipment constantly and will fix or replace any piece of equipment not up to standard.
New players and smaller players are never allowed to go against larger, more experienced players unless they show and ability to handle such circumstances. RCYFL has a "fifth quarter" session at the beginning of every game where first year and smaller players who may not get as much playing time otherwise are allowed special time to play against kids of similar size and experience. This affords them the opportunity to learn the game while lessening the chances of getting hurt.
Football is a contact sport and injuries DO occur, but we strive to make sure that no player is ever put in a situation where their chances for an injury are increased.
Parents are NOT allowed onto the practice fields during practices. Only the parent or guardian of a child may pick them up after practices and we never allow children to stay unsupervised after practices. We do ask that parents make arrangments for kids to be at practices and games on time and that someone pick them up promptly afterwards.
